Interregional and Forced migration

In the early 1990s many Indonesians were migrating out of the area because of over cowded living conditions. Central Javanease having the greatest percent of outmigration during 1971-1980, having a 73 percent increase. After this, about 6 percent of the oter islands were Javanease. Where most Indonesians migrated themselves, some were forced by the government-sponsored Transmigration Program. From 1969 to 1989, about 730,000 Indonesian families were relocated out of the over populated islands like Java, Bali, and Madura to some of the countries smaller, less populated islands. About half of these migrants went to the southern provinces of Sumatra, and lesser numbers went to places such as Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Irian Jaya.
